* On and off eBay you’ll see manufacturers offering 10, 100, 1000 copies of their own creations, individually numbered, sometimes signed. Maker is not always the most important factor, what is important is that the basic item is desirable in its own right, and, as a limited edition is genuinely subject to the laws of demand and supply and likely to grow in value fast.

* Choose something that’s collectible for it’s own sake, like teddy bears, dolls, hand-painted depictions of famous buildings, prints of original oil paintings and watercolours. Let eBay help you choose: go to ‘Advanced search’, top right of any eBay screen, next page type in ‘limited edition’, tick ‘completed auctions’, study limited edition items that have already fetched high prices. Model your own creations on these. My favourites right now and items I’d like to sell? Strange coloured Teddy bears (no gold, beige, brown for me; I want navy blue, purple, tartan); lifelike baby dolls; hand-made jewellery with exclusive charms; hand-made, hand-painted, hand-signed plates depicting guess what? Yes, my favourite: Boxer dogs!

* Look for items you can have created specially for you, such as dolls and teddies, paintings, china ornaments. Here’s a good idea: look in very old magazines and newspapers, preferably published in the USA before 1923 – they’re in the public domain – look for patterns to resurrect for your business. Approach craftworkers and artists to create a limited number of copies, or create these items yourself. Get outsiders to sign a contract of secrecy and exclusivity, meaning they can’t produce copies except for you and they must keep the instructions secret and hand them back when production ends.

* Have each piece numbered, 1 of 10, 1 of 1000, for example, and include artist signatures.

* Keep numbers as low as possible, ten items might be worth more cumulatively than 1000 items. Once production ends, describe products as ‘Retired’, it sounds much grander than ‘end-of-line’.

* Add a certificate of authenticity for all items, giving artist details and individual production numbers. Create the certificate of authenticity in passport or birth certificate fashion and add novelty value to dolls and bears designed for collecting rather than play purposes.

It seems like everything these days is being advertised as luxury. Cars like Kia and Hyundai claim that they sell cheap luxury models. Adds in magazines make you think that anyone can afford a luxury watch or diamonds. Most condos being built in my city are advertised as luxury buildings.

Isn't the point of luxury that it's a rarer higher class item that cannot be bought by just anyone. I'm not a consumer of these products, but it seems like these days the word luxury is slapped on any item.

I was recently given a Rotary watch for my graduation.
I'm not particularly keen on the design, but I was assured it is a nice watch that will last me 20 years and that the classic design is timeless.

I know some of you are going to disagree and say that you’ve never looked at your watch for anything more than telling you if you are late for your date. But trust me, its not just this. You might think so, but a watch is much more than that even for the out most practical dudes amongst us. Some people are conscious of this, some of them a little too much and this results in an obsession about watches.

They become watch-collectors and adore their closet with hundreds of time-pieces, most of whom never really make it to their wrist. But even for the rest of us a watch is something personal. It is probably the only thing that has an appeal for men which is not influenced entirely by practicality and purpose. The Historic line consists of Luminor Base, Luminor Marina and Radiomir. The Luminor Base comes in five editions: PAM 00114, PAM 00112, PAM 00176, PAM 00219, PAM 00000. Each with a small variation but maintaining a 44mm stainless steel or titanium case, hand-wound mechanisms, a 56 hour power reserve, a water resistance of 300 meters, leather or alligator straps, with functions for hours and minutes and a see-through sapphire crystal back. The Luminor Marina has four editions: PAM 00113, PAM 00111, PAM 00177 and PAM 00005. This series has similar characteristics with the difference that the functions also include small seconds. And finally the Radiomir comes in 6 models: PAM 00231, PAM 00210, PAM 00292, PAM 00183, PAM 00197 and PAM 00190. The Panerai Radiomir comes in hand-wound and automatic mechanical systems, has a 45mm stainless steel or 18 carat rose gold case, comes with a power reserve of 50 hours, shows hours, minutes and small seconds, a leather strap and large-size polished steel buckle and has a water resistance of 100 meters.

The Panerai Contemporary line consists of Luminor Marina Automatic, Luminor Submersible, Luminor GMT, Luminor Power Reserve, Luminor Chrono, Radiomir Black Seal and Radiomir Chrono.  A lot of these models are simply upgrades from the Historic line, but others bring completely new elements to the Panerai precision time pieces. The Luminor Submersible stands out with its models PAM 00243, PAM 00024 and PAM 00025 because amongst its functions besides having hours, minutes and small seconds it has the date, calculation of immersion time, it also has a steel or titanium back, with a rubber strap and 300 meter water resistance. Radiomir Chrono is a classic model with a 45 mm case that includes two chronometer push-pieces, a 42 hour power reserve and is water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters.

The Manifattura line is Panerai’s line-up of watches with in-house movements built by Panerai. In most cases when the in-house movements are designed by the watchmaker there is really no distinct difference, but with Officine Panerai watches this is not the case. Whether we take a look at manual winding or self winding watch from the Panerai manifattura line it offers a 6 to 10 day power reserves, which is much longer than the 2 to 3 day power reserve of other watches.

This line also contains GMT watches, where most GMT watches will have a second hour hand to keep track of a second time zone. The primary hour hand (rotating every 12 hours) is read in conjunction with 12 one-hour markers on the dial while the secondary hand (rotating every 24 hours) is read in conjunction with a second set of hour markers on the dial or the bezel. Panerai manifattura watches primary and secondary hour hands both rotate every 12 hours. In order to show whether or not the GMT hand is indicating AM or PM, a small AM/PM indicator is incorporated into the small seconds hand.

Special Edition watches are designed and produced annually, in limited editions which are distributed among retailers and official Officine Panerai stores. These Special Editions vary, but the latest were produced in 2009, which were the Luminor Power Reserve (PAM 00028) with a production of 1000 units, Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante (PAM 00332) with 500 units and the Radiomir Egiziano (PAM 00341) with 500 units.

At the end of the day Officine Panerai watches holds a revered position among watch collectors with its limited and special edition time pieces. All of their references hold unique characteristics that set them apart and reaffirm their status as a world renowned precision time piece producer.

The Royal Oak Concept watch took Audemars Piguet more than two years to produce because of its tedious technology involved both in its movement and design. It is a mechanical and manual-winding tourbillon. The finishing is fully by hand to complete its chamfered and sapphire-blasted plates, bars and bridges in its movement.

It case is made of Alacrite 602 which is an alloy of cobalt, chromium, and tungsten used widely in the aeronautical industry. The bezel is made of titanium and the case is made to resist pressure up to 50 bar and a water resistance up to 500m.

It has a thick case of 17.51mm and its sapphire crystal is 4.58mm thick too. Its caseback is transparent with sapphire crystal of 4.13mm thick. This positions the Royal Oak Concept watch to be able to withstand extreme conditions. Even the tourbillon is resting on a few shock absorbers.

The power reserve indicator is linear at 3 and shows 1 barrel turn for every 6 hours. It also runs a Dynamograph at 12 which is a mainspring tourque indicator.

The dial is replaced by the bottom plate of the movement making it look skeletonized. It has a sub-dial for small seconds located at 6 and its tourbillon can be seen at 9.

The crown function selector is positioned at 3 with a pushpiece at 4. The pushpiece allows a selection to be neutral, rewinding, and hour and minutes where the crown can adjust these three choices. This prevents wear and tear of the joints for the movement as well as improves its water resistance capability.

Its straps are all made of synthetic fibers that use Audemars Piguet’s clasp system made of titanium and stainless steel. This watch is a limited edition of 150 pieces only celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Royal Oak.
